In American postwar literature, The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger, the seclusive writer, is generally acknowledged as 'one of the modern classics', and Salinger is thought of as a 'contemporary literary genius with unique style'. This novel vividly reproduced the mental state of the postwar American youth: though enjoying an abundant material life, they were spiritually barren.
