On LI Gou's Opinion of Literature

李觏强调文学的教化作用,坚持儒家传统的功利主义的文学观。他推崇韩柳文章李杜诗,批评西昆体之流弊,与北宋诗文革新运动的先驱者和领导者持论相同,立场一致,指出了宋代文学发展的正确方向,李觏是一个履行修正、学风严谨的学者。他在中国思想史上的建树和贡献,大于他在文学创作方面的成就和贡献。

LI Gou emphasized the instructive fu nction of literature.He insisted in applying Confucian materialism to outlook on literature.He held Han &L iu' s articles and Li &Du' s poems in esteem.And he criticized t he drawbacks of Xikun' s type of writing.His viewpoint was t he same as the pioneers and directors in literature reform movement in BeiSong Dynasty.He pointed out the c orrect direction for the developmen t of Song' s literature.LI Gou is an honest,upright and rigorous scholar.His contribution to the Chinese history of idea was more important than his achi evements in literature field.
