A NEW SUBSPECIES OF Spelaeornis troglodytoides

During our Avifauna studies in Sichuan, Hunan and Hubei Provinces, we have discovered a new subspecies of the Bar-winged Wren Babbler which we proposed to name as: Spelaeornis troglodytoides nanchuanensis subsp. nov. Holotype: adult female (Field number: 640105) , collected from Jinfo Shan, Nanchuan County, Sichuan, on Aug. 1 , 1964; alt. 1800m. Paratypes: Two adult males (Field number: 640175, 880055) and one unsex (Field number: 880145) collected from Jinfo Shan, Nanchuan County, Sichuan, on Aug. 7, 1964 (alt. 2200m.), Tianping Shan, Sangzhi County, Hunan, on Aug. 23, 1988 (alt. 1570m) and Chang tanhe, Xuan'en County, Hubei, on Spt. 6, 1988 (alt. 1800m) The Holotype has been collected in Sichuan Teacher's College, the other three paratypes are in Kunming Institute of Zoology, Academia Sinica (No. 880055, 880145) and Sichuan Agricultural University (No. 640175). Diagnosis: Similar to nominate troglodytoides, it has less conspicuous spot and no white throat, but the rpecies of halsueti, rocki and souliei have conspicuous spot on the upper-part of their bodies and white throats. The new subspecies has rufous rather than grey upper part. Its throat and underpart are purely orange rufous, and the center of its belly is streaked with distinct rufous-white lines, whereas the nominate subspecies has tinged grey upper part with light rufous throat, orange rufous under part and noticeable rufous-white spot on their breast and belly. Boby weight, measurements of the type specimens and the key to the subsp- evies of Spelaeornis troglodytoides of China are listed in the Chineses text. Ecology and distribution: So far it is only seen in the places mentioned above. Notes on Ecology are given in the Chineses text. Specimens examined: 1. S. t. halsuetii 3 , collected from Nanjiang County (Dec. 8, 1965) and Changkou County (May 26, June 24, 1965) in Sichuan Province. 2. S. t. rocki: 1 1 collected from Lijiang County (Aug. 25, 1956) and Weixi County (Dec. 1 , 1981) in Yunnan Province. 3. S.t. troglodytoides; 3 1 2 , collected from Baoxing County (Topotypes, Oct. 20, 1962; June 28, 1963), Ganluo County (Apr. 2, 1974), Emei Shan (May 24, 1959; March 6 , 1960) and Shimian County (July 21, 1955) in Sichuan Province. 4. S. t. nanchuanensis subsp. nov: 2 1 1 collected from Nan-chuan County (Aug. 1 - 7 , 1964) in Sichuan Province, Sangzhi County (Aug. 23, 1988), Hunan Province and Xuan' en County (Sept. 6, 1988), Hubei Province.
