In the course of developing west China, it is crucial in maintaining the national unity to correctly treat traditional ethnic cultures, especially those factors concerning religious beliefs and customs. The relationship between the religious cultures of the minorities in this region and modernization is a very sensitive problem. The author holds that a given religious culture is the wisdom and hallmark of a given nationality's existence, the protection and development of such culture is the basic principle in handling ethnic religions, and the utilization of such culture is the main approach.
