Optically active 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol has been extensively studied as an excellent chiral ligand in asymmetric catalysis. This review describes recent advances in the applications of monomeric and polymeric binaphthols in a variety of catalytic asymmetric reactions. Several new catalytic strategies involving 1, 1'-bi-2-naphthol ligand are also highlighted.
