Pearl S. Buck has always been an alien, something that has determined her writing style when she tells tales about the Chinese. She writes by focusing on the superficial, giving minute and exquisite descriptions, and being lengthy and repetitive, not out of a consideration for readers of the West who know virtually nothing about China. She tells her stories subjectively with the same attitude to readers who grow up in China.
