Mao Dun's literary realism has the following characteristics: epic reflection of the time, a strong sense of both participation and mission, and remarkable depth of thought for keen artistic expression. Through his novels, he described and viewed the metropolis aesthetically and discriminatingly from the economic and cultural perspectives. In creating images of female characters, he combined them with the destiny of the time, which suggested a spirit of feminist consciousness and helped to explain the complications of period characters. All these have certain implications for contemporary novel writing.
