This article discusses the Literary Archaist Movement initiated by the Seven Gentlemen in the Ming Dynasty. The reputation of the Seven Gentlemen has been either very good or very bad. This article puts the Seven Gentlemen against the background of the Hongzhi and Zhengde reigns, when the powerful and prosperous Ming empire was going to decline, in order to trace their footprints and analyze the merits and demerits of their literary thoughts.
