墓室画像砖(石)艺术是古代墓葬文化的一种艺术形式,它间接反映了一定历史时期的社会政治、经济、文化传统以及艺术思想等多方面的情况。南朝与北朝墓室画像砖(石)艺术有着平行发展的艺术源流,都是对汉画像砖(石)艺术的继承和发展,同时由于南北社会不同的历史背景和文化传统,二者在艺术思想上又各异其趣。

The stone reliefs in coffin chamber are a kind of artistic forms of the ancient grave culture. They reflect social politics, economics, cultural conventions and artistic ideas of particular historical period. Stone reliefs in the Northern and Southern Dynasties had the same source and course and parallel development. They carried on and developed the art of stone reliefs in Han Dynasty. Meantime, because of the different historical background and cultural conventions ,the artistic ideas were different.
