This paper aims at describing the comprehension process in consecutive interpreting. It first explores the interpreting models and the main components of interpreting process and then puts the main focus on Gile's comprehension model which attaches great importance to interpreters' linguistic knowledge, extra linguistic knowledge, and the ability to analyze the SL text. In the ensuing part, the three components of Gile's model are discussed in detail and the analysis of the SL text is given priority. The paper ends by further emphasizing the important role of interpreters' extra linguistic knowledge in performing their job and expecting more and more interpreters trained for cross cultural communication.
