Interleukin-6(IL-6) is a pleiotrpic cytokine which can be produced by many kinds of cells,and has intimate relationship with periodontitis.In the early stage of stimulation by pathogens, normal level of IL-6 has a certain protective function to periodontal tissue. But the increasing IL-6 acts pathological roles in alveolar bone resorption and inhibiting the growth of main periodontal cells etc.The production and functions of IL-6 can be regulated by many factors. Detection of IL-6 has certain clinical significance to the diagnosis of periodontitis as well as inhibition the production and destructive roles of IL-6 to the treatment of periodontitis.
