Virginia Woolf is considered one of the most outstanding representatives of modernism in English literature in the 20th century. Her works have been widely studied. To the lighthouse , a novel which employs the technique of stream of consciousness, is rich in metaphors and symbols. It is regarded as the best of all her novels. Different scholars have dug out many different meanings about its theme. While the author of this article, however, tries to read the novel and to look for its symbolic meanings from the angle of analyzing the relationship among the characters as well as the symbolic meanings these characters themselves refract.
