George Eliot is one of the most influential novelists in 19 th century who lived in transition from tradition to modern. However, she did not think it is a breakup between tradition and modern, even future, instead, each age would definitely bear cultural marks from the past. The past saves the origin of traditional civilization while modern inherits and develop from history, from which more complete cultural system will be established. No matter attachment to pastoral scenery and life or profound reflection to social reality, Eliot's works imply deep cultural connotation and national sentiments.
