MODIFYING THE SOIL TO MAKE IT SUIT THE PLANTS

摘要 在进行植物园、市政绿化和城市公园建设,或者修复已被高度干扰的土壤以用于农业生产和园艺栽培的时候,可能必须改变所选地块土壤材料的品质,以满足特定的使用目的。目前土壤科学已在物理、化学和微生物学等层面对土壤拥有了高度的认知,这对土壤改良大有裨益。本文讨论了如何通过使用特制的堆肥和褐煤的混合物,使高度酸性、贫瘠和持水力差的自然沙土得到改良,以使多种不同的澳大利亚本土植物能够在墨尔本附近的克蓝本皇家植物园中良好生长。褐煤不是常用的土壤改良物质,在使用前需要经过特别的测试和试验。 In establishing a garden, a municipal ornamental planting, a city park or remediating highly disturbed soils for use in agriculture or horticulture it may be necessary to change the quality of the soil material at the chosen location to make it suitable for the chosen purpose.Soil science today has achieved a high degree of understanding the physics, chemistry and microbiology of soils to be able to help.This paper discusses how by using a mixture of special composts and lignite(brown coal) it was possible to improve highly acidic, infertile and low water holding natural sandy soil to enable many different Australian native plants to be grown successfully in the Royal Botanic Garden at Cranbourne, near Melbourne. Lignite is not a commonly used soil improver and the use of it required special testing and experimentation.
