从某些方面来看,《中国近代史》算是蒋廷黻的一篇政治演讲稿。文中,他通过对中国近代史实的叙述,表明了自己的政治观点及对对外战争的看法。蒋廷黻所要表达的主题就是:中国现在是弱国,正在积极进取之中,争取早日富强;但在还未强大之时,应该尽量避免战争,立志改革,韬光养晦,以待将来与敌人抗衡;国力衰微之时,战必败,历史上的许多例子都证明了这一点。

In some respects,"the Chinese Modern history" is a a political speech for Jiang Tingfu.In the book,he has demonstrated his political viewpoints through narrating the history of Chinese modern times.The entire book is presenting his views on the external war.What he intends to express is: China is a weak country now,and is striving for prosperity and power.But now,we should avoid the war,be determined to reform,hiding our abilities,and wait for opportanities to resist against the enemy in the future.When the national strength is weak,the war will be unsucessful,many examples have proven this point in history.
