Discipline Violation Reports Concerning Soldiers from 58th Japanese Army Division in 1942 During Battles with New Fourth Army

1942年日军第五十八师团在湖北及周边地区对新四军实施"扫荡"作战期间,其师团长下野一霍屡屡向陆军大臣东条英机提交士兵内部违纪的报告。这些报告现藏于日本防卫省防卫研究所图书馆,揭示了日军普遍存在士兵违反内部军纪的现象,如逃跑、投敌、自残、挟私报复、打架斗殴、掉队、嫖娼、偷盗、诈骗、玩忽职守等。本文选取了其中具有代表性的十三份报告,希望能从微观视角还原抗战时期日军内部的真实景况,为新四军抗战史研究提供新视角。

When the 58th Division of the Japanese Army was conducting the“Wiping-out Operations”against the New Fourth Army in Hubei and surrounding areas in 1942,Yikkaku Shimono,the division commander,repeatedly submitted reports to Hideki Tojo,the Minister of the Army concerning the soldiers’discipline violations.These reports,now stored in Defense Research Institute Library of the Japanese Ministry of Defense,revealed the frequent and various violations of military disciplines among soldiers in the Japanese army,such as fleeing,surrender,self-injury,private revenge,group fighting,dropping out,whoring,stealing,fraud,neglect of duty.Based on 13 typical reports,this paper intends to restore the real situation within the Japanese army during the Anti-Japanese War and to provide a new perspective for the study of the history of the New Fourth Army.
