Fantasy and reality: The Late Qing Dynasty Officials' Mentality Change on the Foochow Arsenal

福州船政局在近代海军史上占据重要地位,其兴衰过程影响着晚清官绅的心态转变。船政初创时期,出现洋务派与守旧势力的论战,多数人还是对船政局抱有希望,船政颇有成效而信心大增。但在外部的冲击下,官绅阶层出现分化,对船政局产生"纠结"心理,甲午战后,又对福州船政局有了全新的认识。

The Foochow Arsenal has played a fundamental role in the modern naval history. Its rise and fall has influenced a lot on the mentality change of the late Qing Dynasty officials. At initial foundation stage of the arsenal, when there was a controversy between Westernization movement and conservative forces, most people felt hopeful of it, and the arsenal became powerful and confident. With the impact of the outside society, the officials appeared differentiation and had 'Mixed' mentality towards arsenal, and after the First Sino-Japanese War, people had a new understanding to the Foochow Arsenal.
