A Pragmatic Study of Chinese Apologies

本文以汉语文本中的道歉语为对象,分析了道歉的策略:显性表达,解释说明,承担责任,提供补偿和保证克制。另外,本文发现道歉可以实现补救冒犯、恢复人际和谐,降低即将发生的冒犯行为的程度,表达谦虚、感激或者幽默等功能。

Through the analysis of the apologies in two Chinese novels, this paper explores the strategies of Chinese apologies: explicit apology, offering explanation, shouldering responsibility, offering repair and promise of forbearance. Besides, this paper also finds that apologies can realize functions such as remedying the offence and restoring interpersonal harmony, reducing the degree of the anticipatory offence, and expressing gratitude or humor.
