Stories of Water Margin, either through Shi Nai’an’s novel of the same name, or the TV play on CCTV, were wildly known. But, do you know that figures in these stories can also be found in Northeast folk custom? The card game of "Water Margin Playing Cards"(stories’ figures were vividly painted on the cards) might be long forgotten by modern people. The game came into being by the end of Tang Dynasty(618-907) and was current in Liao Dynasty(907-1125). The book Water Margin written in Ming Dynasty(1368-1644) injected fresh blood in the old game and made it the most popular card game at the time.In Qing Dynasty(1644-1911), the Northeast folk custom performances, such as walking on stilts and yangko, contained many figures in costume like heroes in Water Margin. Moreover, both song-anddance duet that presented the amorous feelings of Northeast of China and New Year pictures drew materials from these stories. And marks of these stories could still be seen in many details.
