In 2013, the euro area economy recovered, albeit at a subdued pace and with remaining downside risks. In this paper, the author considers the possibility of a 'lost decade' faced by the euro area, and explores the reasons as well as the risk factors that may drag on economic growth. By drawing an analogy with Japan's experience, it also offers policy recommendations based on the euro area's own conditions.
