The rise of national power has created a sea change in the international monetary system. The internationalization of the renminbi is a direct result of the defects of a global monetary system based on a single sovereign currency. This paper reviews the evolution of renminbi internationalization and examines the experience of major economies in promoting a global role for their own currencies. It makes a prudential assessment of the post-SDR era for the renminbi, taking currency competition and internationalization as its basic guidelines.
