The Chinese river dolphin (Lipotes vexillifer Miller) is one genus of the most rarely aquatic mammals. It lives in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River (Yangtze.) in China. The systematic position of Lipotes is within Cetacea, Odontoceti, Platanistidae. In Plantanistidae, there are four genera or six species of living fresh water dolphins, i.e., Lipotes vexillifer, Platanista gangetica, Platanista indi, Inia boliviensis, Inia geoffrensis and Pontoporia blainvillei.
