In factor analysis, due to the indeterminacy of factor solutions, in order to obtain the factors which can satisfy the so-called 'simple structure', the factor matrix often undergoes various rotations according to different criterion. In the case of orthogonal factor solutions, 'simple structure' implies that an objective matrix is a simple structured sparse matrix. In this matrix, many of the elements would near 0 while others would near ±1. For this purpose, the Varimax and Quartimax criteria have been proposed.
