It has been demonstrated that the stereospecific opiate binding sites do exist in the central nervous system of animals and man. One of the most interesting tasks is to purify the receptor to homogenity. As a matter of fact, an opiate receptor clings tightly to cell membranes and is difficult to solubilize. Moreover, such a receptor is unusually minute.The progress in this field has been retarded. Recently,several laboratories succeeded in solubilizing opiate receptor by using various detergents.
