In the investigation of the planar approximation to the non-abelian lattice gauge field theory it is instructive to first treat the 'zero dimension' models, e.g., the matrix models. One-matrix model and two-matrix model have been solved exactly in the large N limit. Sakita has applied the Feynman variational method to the one-ma-trix model, and Guha has applied it to the two-matrix model. Their results
