In this essay my central concern is to establish the presence of carnivalas process, metaphor, and form-in the constructivist visual language.I trace the narrative/image of the urban carnival, which,I suggest, can be read as a metaphor for the constructivist paradigm and which consequently functions as an ideological and visual bridge between constructivist theater and architecture. This narrative/image ultimately informs the constructivist imaging of Utopia. But this Utopia, with its implications of Utopia as heterotopia,Utopia as spectacle, and Utopia as the 'world upside down,' is almost by default a Utopia of chaos-in a society which wants to impose order on chaos,it will be rejected.
