While the human desire to settle in a sedentary life is deeply inherent,we in the meantime envisage,or even search for,the freedom of nomads.Architecture needless to say is the primary instrument for human settlement;it is therefore by nature a 'conservative' art. This however does not mean there is no room for an imagined 'floating life' in architecture.Quite the contrary, architecture throughout human history has always been used to balance this deeply rooted contradiction between settlement and freedom.Through a speculative interpretation of the geometrical orders of architectural horizontality and verticality in relation to this human contradiction, this essay examines a short cultural history of housing patterns from courtyard, room matrix to room and corridor in both the West and the East.
