Translation, literary translation in particular, is an intercultural communicative activity whose complexity, diversity, and ambiguity can be matched by no other branches of science of the humanities. It is therefore no surprise that literary translation has caused endless arguments as to the rights and wrongs in translation. The time-honored pursuit of 'faithfulness' in translation, either in theory or practice, has become a myth which has exploded itself. The so-called 'ideal realm,' too, is nothing but a dream that is desirable but unattainable. The phenomenon of 'abridgement' of and 'supplement' to original works in Lin's translated novels is by no means an isolated case in the field of translation, nor does it involve mere technical problems. Rather, it directly points to the various relations within the system of multi-culture.
