摘要 There are three links for determining the intention of the subject for Fa Tan:the figurative meaning of the expression of "the river water is clear..." in the first lines; the usage of the character "胡" in the poem; whether or not the use of the phrase of "that gentleman" at the end is an enantiosis. The three links work together to form the intention of subject for Fa Tan: praising the incorruptibility and wisdom of the gentleman who lost his official position but tilled by himself to earn his own living and worked for the civilization of the locality; satirizing those without merits but received emoluments.
