An Analysis of the Faithfulness Principle in Translation

在汉英互译的实践中,总有某一个指导原则即忠实性原则在起作用。一般来说,一个好的译文在意义和功能上都应体现“信”即“忠实”效果;同时,直译和意译也是为了使译文忠实于原作的具体表现形式。另外,原语往往会出现译文的“假忠实”。因此,在翻译过程中,就应遵循分析、转换和重构的“三步走战略”,尽可能避免假忠实性现象的出现,使译文具有可读性。

In the practice of mutual translation between Chinese and English, a principle of some kind, the principle of faithfulness has been playing an important role. Generally speaking, a proper translationshould embody the effect of faithfulness both in meaning and function. Literal translation and free translation are the concrete forms to make translation more faithful to the original work. However, original work often appears false faithfulness of its translation. Therefore, in the course of translation, we should follow the three stages of analysis, transformation and reconstruction to avoid false faithfulness, and to make translation proper.
