Thoughts on Studying Xu Yuan-chong’s Translation Theories

回顾我国20年来的翻译研究,不难发现,我们在吸收西方理论的同时,却忽视了对本国传统翻译理论的挖掘,而且对于别人理论的批判,多于自己有益的建树.然而,弥足珍贵的是,北京大学的许渊冲教授,却一直致力于构建系统的翻译学说.本文通过考察许渊冲的主要学术观点及围绕这些观点的争论得出,唯有扬起创造的风帆,我们才能在翻译理论研究方面开辟出新的天地.

A brief review of translation studies in China for the past 20 years will reveal a problem: we seem to have over emphasized the Western theories to the neglect of our own treasures, and to have been over interested in refuting others' theories to the neglect of contributing our own. However, we are glad to note that Prof. Xu Yuan zhong in Beijing University has been devoting himself to the construction of a systematic translation theory. After examining the main issues raised by Prof. Xu and the debates concerning his theories, the author, on reflection, argues that unless we are ready to cast off the old mode of thinking we can't expect to make substantial progress in our translation studies.
