Foregrounding" in the Novel

“突出”是文体学中重要的概念,是文学语言的基本特征。文体分析在很大程度上依赖于对“突出”语言特征的研究和描述。“突出”存在于一切文学作品当中,但它在不同体裁、不同流派的作品中的表现和作用是不同的。本文主要探讨的是“突出”与小说的关系,以及“突出”在现代主义和现实主义两类小说中的表现与作用。

Foregrounding' is the essential quality of all literary language. As an important concept in stylistics, 'foregrounding' plays a key role in stylistic analysis. Foregrounded features can provide the clue to a better understanding of a literary work. Though 'foregrounding' can be found in all literary works, it takes different forms, and plays different roles in different works. This paper is, first of all, a discussion on the relationship between foregrounding and the novel, and then an inquiry into the foregrounded features in two types of the novel: Modernist and Realistic.
