Characteristics and English Translation of Chinese Long Sentences in Rock Mechanics Papers

岩石力学中文论文的语言特点之一是长句多。故此,其长句英译的质量直接影响到译文整体的质量。本文基于岩石力学论文的英译,分别从'流水分句长'、'流水分句多'、'逻辑衔接弱'和'语义重点‘错’'等特点对该类论文中的长句进行案例分析,并以'简洁性、准确性、可读性'为英译要求,在理解汉英表达差异后,针对上述特点提出相应的英译策略如'逻辑仿译'、'断句分译'、'增加衔接'和'调整语序'等,最后请外国专家审读把关,从而保证译文质量。

One of the features of rock mechanics papers in Chinese is that there are a lot of long sentences,so the quality of the translated versions of long sentences directly influences the quality of a translated paper as a whole. Based on the translated rock mechanics papers,the authors analyze the long sentences in the alleged papers from the perspectives of longer clauses,loose clauses,weak cohesion and different focuses in conveying the same meaning. According to the translation criteria of accuracy,simplicity and readability,such translation strategies as logical imitation,splitting translation,the addition of conjunctions,and adjustment in structure are proposed to deal with concrete difficult cases of the four categories mentioned above after a full understanding of the differences between Chinese and English before a foreign expert is invited to proof-read the final translated version so as to guarantee its quality.
