On Ecological Significance of “Rites”in the Book of Rites

在《礼记》中,礼,作为事物的标准,是规范人与社会的法则,礼教人相爱,上下用情,其目的是致"和"。礼,本天殽地而制,本于人情而成,既秉承自然,又具有人本主义关怀,它以"报本反始"为指向,警劝人们敬畏自然,珍爱一切生命与非生命之物。同时,又规劝人们复归本性,以仁爱之心待人接物。礼别万物所宜,乐促万物亲和,在"礼别异,乐和同"的基础上,共同构成了天地和合的生态境界,旨归于儒家追求的"天人合一"境界。

In the Book of Rites,'Rites',serving as a standard of all things on earth,is the law to regulate human beings and the society they had been living. 'Rites'tells us to love each other and to keep in touch with each other,which is to create 'harmony'among people. Model the law of nature to do things and make something successful by making use of interpersonal relationships: it's the essence of'Rites',adhering to the nature with humanistic care. It leads to insisting the core and returning to a resource,which give a hint to individuals to awe nature and to cherish everything whether it is alive or not. Meanwhile,'Rites'ask us to come back to innocence and get along well with others with their love from heart.'Rites'make a great difference in distinguishing something in our daily life,while'Music'promotes all on earth to become harmonious. On such a special basis,both of them make the ecological realm of harmony in heaven and on earth,which can be attributed to the Confucian pursuit of 'harmony between man and nature'.
