沙博理《水浒传》古典诗词英译

Sidney Shapiro’s English Translation of the Classical Verses in Shui Hu Zhuan

《水浒传》沙博理译本是国家翻译机构中国外文局在'十七年'后期规划的四大名著对外英译项目之一。沙博理作为国家翻译实践的主要译者之一,在其《水浒传》译本中翻译出42首古典诗和词。本文采用定量与定性相结合的方法分析这些诗词,认为沙博理根据诗词在形式呈现、主题要旨和语篇功能上的不同特点,采取不同译诗策略,在诗句调整和词语锤炼上方法灵活,译诗总体呈现出忠实与再创造的融合,而且与译本整体结合较好,自成一体。

As one of the foreign translators serving for the New China’s national translation programs,Sidney Shapiro’s translating Shui Hu Zhuan into English was part of the project of translating the four great classical novels that China International Publishing Group,one of the national translation institutes,planned in the end of the“Seventeen Years”.Actually Shapiro translated 42 classical verses including poems and cis in Shui Hu Zhuan.Through the combination of quantitative and qualitative analysis of these verses,this paper finds that,Shapiro,with a good understanding of their different characteristics in terms of form,theme and discourse function,employs different strategies and various techniques,including adjustment of verse lines and rendering of diction.Shapiro’s translation of classical verses as a whole suggests a fusion of fidelity and recreation,overall integration with the whole translated novel,and thus possess a style of its own.
