Fradique Mendes is a fictional character first created by Portuguese modernists centered around E?a de Queirós.During the latter half of the nineteenth century,Fradique first served as an innovative pioneer to shock the Portuguese literary scene, but later became a Pre-modern third option to solve the tension between Romantism and Realism.About a century later,Angolan author JoséEduardo Agualusa recreated this classic figure in the Post-modern and Post-colonial context through supplementation, subversion and appropriation, turning Fradique into an embodiment of'creoleness'.This paper investigates the transmutations of Fradique Mendes through space, time and culture, both as a literary figure and as a cultural symbol, with emphasis on the intertextuality between Na??o Crioula of Agualusa and A correspondência de Fradique Mendes of E?a,revealing how the former inherits, criticizes, subverts and revolutionizes the latter.
