In the 1940s, there existed two different texts and two different voices in men and women writers' creation of modern women characters in their novels. In terms of women's persistence in individuality, men writers regarded it as selfish and cruel, while women writers respect for self and freedom. As for women's enthusiasm about desire, men writers viewed it as licentious, whereas women writers the symbol of maturity as well as spread of consciousness of one's life. Therefore, in the eyes of men writers, women's liberation had turned into its opposite, but women writers held a different opinion -- their writings were still not strong enough to shake the very foundation of male-centered world. One can sense a deep gloom in men writers' works, in contrast, women writers' novels make one feel the world's barrenness and desolation. All these are enlightening in leading readers to take a further consideration upon women's situation, status, and fate in the male world.
