The application of Lewis pumps in a 400 kt/a copper smelter acid plant is described. In five years of operation, the pumps worked well, but some failures happened, such as abrasion of upper support tube and damage of PTFE shaft cover. Typical pump maintenance anomalies and their solutions are discussed.
