Characters vs. Circumstances, Theme vs. Aesthetic Appreciation:A Comparison Between Social Analysis Group and Qiyue Group

社会剖析派和七月派都是中国新文学史上取得了极高现实主义成就的流派,但其现实主义的具体面貌则相差很大。就人物与环境两者关系上的差异而言,前者表现为客体限制作用大于主体创造品格,后者则主张两者应处于相对平衡的地位。社会剖析派与七月派在此方面的差异,也相应地导致了他们在主题先行与审美先行等方面的差异。

Both Social Analysis Group and Qiyue Group have achieved great realistic achievement in the new Chinese literary history, but they are greatly different from each other in the aspect of specific reality. As concerned with the relationship between characters and circumstances, the former suggest that circumstances play a greater role than the characters do, but the latter tries to keep the balance between the two. This different opinion, thereafter, leads to their different understanding about the priority of theme and aesthetic appreciation.
