This paper discusses the problems about the first author of an academic paper, including the concepts, rights and duties. The first author should be not only the owner of the main ideas of a paper, but also the member of the research group and primary writer of the paper. This paper also expounds the rationality and the practicability of placing the postgraduate's name as the first author. It's necessary to normalize the concepts of the first author, to make clear the rights and duties, and to lay down relevant rules in the notice to contributors. According to the international practice, the tutor's name could be the last of the author names.
