Female characters are statically depicted without clearcut personality in 'Dream of Red Mansions', which seems the facial makeup in Beijing opera. But in 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' Hardy dynamically and realistically describe the characters with the change of time and setting. The former also especially pays much attention to the verve of characters, while the latter attaches importance to the fleshy beauty with emphasis on sex. These differences show that the writers are respectively influenced by the traditional Chinese painting or the western painting. On the other hand, they also reflect the distinctive aesthetics about beauty and sex in China and in the west.
