Through the concept of 'NonDarwinian Revolution',Peter JBowler questions the orthodox image of 'Darwinian Revolution'Bowler suggests that Darwin's theory should be seen as the central theme in nineteenth-century evolutionism, and that the emergence of the modern synthetic theory could be seen relatively independent of the doctrine of 'natural selection'Darwin proposedThe reconstruction of the history of evolutionism by Bowler shows that evolutionism based on the model of 'development' dominated in the nineteenth-century,and the evolutionism in question was grounded in the idea of 'progress'Thus Bowler displays the continuity of the idea of 'progress' in historyNot only is investigation into the relation between the idea of 'progress' and the thought of evolution indispensable for the reconstruction of the history of evolutionism, but it is also a key to understanding our modern world
