A Review of Wang Guo-wei's Theory about Novel Writing

王国维的小说研究视野相当开阔 ,虽然他涉及小说的许多论述都并非专为小说而发 ,但其理论出发点或理论亮点常常落在小说上 ,所以他的小说理论是可以明确的 ,并略成系统。由《王国维遗书》中整理出他关于小说创作方面的理论 ,大致包括论述小说创作动机的“苦痛—解脱”说、论述小说创作态度的“忠实”说、论述小说创作储备的“阅世”说、论述小说创作任务的“描写人格”说等。

Wang Guo-wei's study of the novel offers a very wide vision. Although many of his discussions which factually relate to the novel are not aimed at novel intentionally. Their theoretical starting point or highlight is often about the novel. As a result, Wang Guo-wei's theory about the novel can be clarified and systemized. His theories concerning novel writing listed from The Posthumous Papers of Wang Guo-wei, can be roughly summed up as doctrine of Pain-Extrication which is about the motive of creating novel, the doctrine of faith, which is about the attitude; the doctrine of seeing the world about the preparation for novel writing, and the doctrine of describing moral quality about the mission.
