霍桑思想中清教观与超验主义的离合——以《红字》为例

霍桑是十九世纪美国最为杰出的浪漫主义小说家。霍桑的作品常把道德和历史内容巧妙地融入艺术手法之中。《红字》作为霍桑厚积薄发的作品,自1850年出版以来就备受争议,小说以十分敏感的私通为主题,将其思想隐退,以道德作为小说人物的救赎之路。而霍桑身怀清教主义的基因,同时也是超验主义时代的旁观者。小说是作者双重思想碰撞下产生的经典,通过分析文中所体现的清教主义思想与超验主义思想之间的冲突与融合,从而更好的理解霍桑思想。

Nathaniel Hawthorne is regarded as the most outstanding novelist of American Romanticism in the 19 th century.His works often integrate the moral and history into the artistic technique tactfully.'The Scarlet Letter'is the famous work that Hawthorne is well-prepared and aggressive.And it has been controversial since its publication in 1850.The novel uses adultery as the main line of the story,and moral as the redemption of characters.Hawthorne is the successor of Puritanism,and he is also the spectator of the Transcendental Age.The two thoughts make the text famous and classic.In order to understanding Nathaniel Hawthorne's thoughts,this paper will analyze the conflict and integration between the Puritanism and the Transcendentalism in the text.
