"All Hands on Deck":Collation of Shiji in the 1950s

民国时期,已有学者点校《史记》,但由于种种原因,成书质量不高。新中国成立后,点校《史记》由个人行为上升为国家行为,在毛泽东主席的关怀和指示下,由中华书局组织众多一流史家协力完成,这一版本数十年来被学术界公认为最完善的点校本。1959年由中华书局出版的点校本《史记》,最初是由贺次君标点、顾颉刚复勘的,后来由于问题太多,由宋云彬参考顾颉刚与贺次君标点本重新标点并加工,最后由聂崇岐覆校,其中又有王伯祥、叶圣陶等人参与,中华书局金灿然等总负责而成,充分体现了"众手为之"在古籍整理中的作用。

During the Republic of China, there were some scholars that collated Shiji. However, due to various reasons, the quality of the books was not high. After the founding of the People′ s Republic of China, the task of collating Shiji rose from a personal behavior to a national mission. Instructed by Mao Zedong and the Zhonghua Book Company organized a large number of first-rate historians to complete the task. For decades this edition has been recognized by academic circles as the most perfect collation. Shiji published by the Zhonghua Book Company in 1959 was firstly punctuated by He Cijun and re-examined by Gu Jiegang. Later, due to too many problems, this version was re-punctuated and examined by Song Yunbin with reference to Gu Jiegang and He Cijun punctuation, and finally examined by Nie Chongqi. In addition, Wang Boxiang and Ye Shengtao participated in the work, and Jin Canran from the Zhonghua Book Company and other officials were responsible for it. This process reflected the significance of 'all hands on deck' in the collation of ancient books.
