The so-called 'blocking effect' of 'dou' is examined from the functional point of view, and the formalist explanation is proved to be untenable. The factor involved in the observed 'blocking effect' of ' dou' is the status of information: non-focus constituents can appear between ' dou' and its target; but constituents that express focus information will block the quantification of 'dou'. Therefore, 'dou' can be regarded as a natural boundary between the non-focus information that precedes it and the focus information that follows it in a sentence.
