Flannery O'Connor is acknowledged to be one of the most prestigious writers in the post war American literature. Previous commentaries have been focused mostly on the themes of violence, racial attitude, and religious implications underlying her works. This paper is intended to approach the theme of estrangement, claimed to be an equally prevailing one in O'Connor's writing, through an interpretation of the plot, characters and images in her short story Everything That Rises Must Converge in addition to an analysis of the motivations that give rise to the theme.
