Watching the Relationships between Hu and Han Cultures from the Dress Reform in Northern Wei Dynasty

北魏服饰改革经历了漫长而艰难的一百多年,终于易胡服为汉装。这一改革历程也展示了胡汉两种文化由冲突走向融合的轨迹。历史证明:在不同文化逐渐融合的过程中,统治者为巩固政权需要而采取的自上而下的举措是起首要的决定性的作用的;同时,发自于民众间的自觉的交流对文化的融合也有着深远的影响。

The dress reform in Northern Wei Dynasty experienced more than 100 long and hard years and finally Hu Dress was changed to Han Dress. This experience also showed the course of these two cultures’ going from conflict to blend. The history shows that in the course of gradual blend of different cultures, the top-down measures that the rulers took for the need of consolidating the political power played the first and decisive roles. Meanwhile, the conscious communications among the masses also had a deep influence on the blend of cultures.
