本文是一组综观20世纪小说及小说文体的文章。文章或从分析小说文体本身出发,认为小说文体的积极实验与不断创新、突破是同现代社会的变革、同“现代人”的生存状况及精神世界的生成、发展紧密相连的,并随着现代社会、文化与现代人精神的重大发展、变异等不断发展。20世纪的中国小说完全处于19世纪中后期以来,贯穿20世纪的世界范围内广泛的小说实验的历程当中。从五四开始,中国现代作家直接承接早期现代主义与各种先锋性小说探索之路向前走,这是现代中国小说发展的正源。或从梳理中国现代小说史的角度出发,认为除从文学反映论角度、文学思潮流派角度撰写现代小说史外,还应当从创作方法角度撰写小说史,并结合各个时期作家的具体创作,重新描绘中国现代小说史。或从社会环境、时代变迁对小说影响的角度出发,论述小说受时代激情影响的两种不同途径,即一是着眼于为社会改造乃至革新、革命服务,二是“为文学而文学”、“为艺术而艺术”,并进而分析现代文学作家的文艺观,这也是贯穿20世纪小说创作的纠结不清而又彼此融合的两条线索:严肃与轻松的不对称变奏。通过一系列分析,透析时代对小说文体理性的影响,并试图寻找小说文体的真正出路。或从现代作家对古典小说的继承态度以及对古典小说的研究情况入手,分析现?
