Translating with Latitude at the Text Level: With Special Reference to Sentence Division and Word Order

英语和汉语分属不同的语言类型,“系统句子”有别,表达习惯迥异。要有效地再现原文的语义内容,必须适当调整译文的语句形式。概言之,翻译时必须具体情况具体分析处理,对句界进行适当的调整,对语序进行必要的整合。

One of the differences between English and Chinese is in sentence structure. In translation between the two languages, therefore, one may have to alter the syntactic form in order to preserve the propositional and communicative content. In this way one is translating with latitude at the level of the text, which involves re-division of sentences and re-arrangement of the source-text word order.
